ABSTRACT
This study focused on the language and beliefs surrounding greetings among the Itsekiri people in Delta State. The research aims to provide a deeper understanding of how the Itsekiri people greet each other, as well as the underlying ideas, beliefs, and opinions associated with these greetings. In this research, the data was gathered through phone interviews. Questions were asked to the five native speakers of the language. These five people were called and asked questions from which the information was obtained. The individuals who were interviewed are between the ages of 55 and 65. The information will be categorized and grouped according to the research questions. The data will be analysed using the theory of ideology. The Itsekiri people value respect and unity so in every one of their greeting, there is a display of respect and familiarity. The child respects his parents, the wife respects her husband and vice versa. The elders are respected, as well as the chiefs and the King. In conclusion, we can see that the main ideology behind the Itsekiri people and their greeting is respect and unity. They uphold respect as a major value in their society.
