ABSTRACT
This study aims to explore the significance of language and culture in identifying people's tribes and ethnic groups in Nigeria, along with its implications for national development and cultural preservation. The study was based on the view of the average Ẹdo person regarding the guild. While some have seen it as an institution strictly linked to the palace others view it as one of the mysteries of the ancient Benin Empire which is no longer relevant to the Ẹdo society. This study employed the qualitative tool to get data on the guilds examined and these were analysed using the descriptive linguistics method of data analysis. This study was observed the fact that the guilds project a unique cultural ideology which confers on them the authorit y to perform certain rites/rituals normally presided over by the Monarch thereby making the guild to be a kind of a state within a state with all the trappings of traditional political authority and prestige. Based on the objectives and goals of the present study, we propose an understanding of language ideology as “the set of socio-cultural values, norms, attitudes, beliefs and orientation regarding the use of language by a group of people in a society”.
