ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the land use and land cover changes in Gilli-Gilli Forest Reserve of Edo state Nigeria. Remote sensing and GIS techniques were used. The landsat imagery was done for 1986 to 2023 and was used for quantitative analysis and assessment. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index range for this period was 0.45 to -0.19, 0.32 to -0.46 and 0.49 to -0.11 for 1986, 2002 and 2023 respectively, it was used to determine the greenness of the dense forest and it showed deforestation resulting from urbanization which has increased in recent times. In 1986, dense forest lost about 5.8 km2 to built- up area, 1.21 km2 to sparse vegetation and 0.52 km2 to water bodies. Although there was slight increase in the year 2002 with dense forest gaining 6.84 km2 from built-up area, 45.85 km2 from sparse vegetation and 0.55 km2 from water bodies. Eventually it has been realized from this study that deforestation has not stopped but has continued to reduce the dense forest from 235.30 km2 to 156.12 km2 in 2023 which may likely continue if nothing is done.
