ABSTRACT
This study was carried out in Isua community in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State, to evaluate some soils for rubber cultivation.
Soil survey product was carried out by the rigid grid method at a detailed scale which produced four (4) mapping units. Each mapping units was represented by a pedon and each pedon was appropriately described. Soil samples were analysed using Standard procedures.
Results of suitability evaluation showed that Pedon 1 representing an area of 17.13 hectares and amounting to 13.37% was not suitable (N) for rubber cultivation with limitation in soil physical characteristics as a result of the texture of the soil. Pedon 2 representing an area of 54.25 hectares and amounting to 42.35% was marginally suitable (S3) for rubber cultivation due to limitations in soil physical characteristics as a result of the texture, fertility characteristics as a result of the base saturation of the soil and climate due to the length of dry season. Pedons 3 and 4 representing an area of 56.73 hectares and amounting to 44.29% of the land area were marginally suitable (S3) for rubber cultivation with limitations in climate due to length of dry season and fertility characteristics due to the base saturation of the soil.
Based on the result of land evaluation, I recommend that the area represented by Pedons 3 and 4 can be used for the cultivation of rubber when there is enough economic justification while Pedons 1 and 2 cannot be used for rubber cultivation due to limitations which cannot easily be ameliorated, it would be more economically feasible if the area is used for the cultivation of any other crop which is better suited to the land characteristics other than rubber.
