ABSTRACT
This study was carried out on a 128 hectare land at Isua Community, in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State, to evaluate its suitability for Pineapple cultivation. The level of suitability will help to identify the important constraints which should be improved on in order to ensure sustainable cultivation of pineapple. Soil survey process was by the rigid grid method at a detailed scale, which produced four mapping units and each mapping unit was represented by a pedon. The pedons were described according to standard procedures. Soil samples were collected from each pedon and analyzed in the laboratory using standard procedures. The results of Land suitability showed that Pedon 1 representing 17.13 hectares which amounts to 13.37% of the total land area was not suitable (Ns) for pineapple cultivation due to limitations in fertility (CEC) on current and potential basis. Pedons 2, 3 and 4 representing an area of 110.87 hectares which amounted to 86.64% of the total land area were moderately suitable (S2) for pineapple cultivation on both current and potential basis. Therefore, the area represented by pedon 1 should not be used for pineapple cultivation. However, with some degree of soil management practices the area represented by pedons 2, 3 and 4 could be used for pineapple cultivation.
