ABSTRACT

This study investigated the knowledge and attitudes of undergraduate students at the university of Benin towards obesity, as well as the influence of knowledge on obesity preventive behaviors. The study was guided by five research questions and three hypotheses. A descriptive survey design was employed, and a self-developed questionnaire was administered to a sample of 100 undergraduate students selected through a multi-stage sampling procedure. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including frequency counts, percentages, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The results showed that the students had a good understanding of obesity and its preventive measures, with female students demonstrating a higher level of knowledge than their male counterparts. Additionally, the study found a significant relationship between knowledge and obesity preventive behaviors, suggesting that education and awareness programs can be effective in promoting healthy lifestyle choices. The study recommends the integration of nutrition education into the university curriculum, the development of targeted interventions for male students, and the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviors through campus-wide initiatives. The findings of this study contribute to the existing body of knowledge on obesity and preventive behaviors among undergraduate students in Nigeria, and provide valuable insights for university administrators and policymakers to develop and implement effective health policies and programmes.
