ABSTRACT
The study examined the Knowledge of Hazards and Safety Practice in the use of Power Generators among Trader in Oba market Benin City. Three research questions and two hypothesis were raised to guide the study. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was 5,000 Traders and a sample size of 399 respondents were used for the study. The instrument used for data collection was the research questionnaire and obtained data were analysed using frequency count, percentage, standard deviation and mean, while chi-square was used to analyze the hypothesis. From the data obtained and analysed, the findings from this study revealed that Traders possess moderate knowledge about the potential hazards associated with improper generator use, although significant proportion still lacks adequate awareness. Lack of awareness about safety practices emerged as a major obstacle that hinder most traders from adopting safety practice. The trader have positive attitude towards the safety practice on the use of power generators. Educational background significantly influences knowledge of generator hazards, but it does not appear to have a significant impact on safety practices. Based on the above findings the researcher concluded that while traders in Oba Market possess moderate knowledge of generator hazards, a substantial number still lack adequate awareness. This knowledge gap significantly impedes the adoption of necessary safety practices. Despite this, traders generally have a positive attitude towards implementing safety measures. However, educational background, though influencing hazard awareness, does not significantly impact actual safety practices. And recommended that Government should conduct regular and practical safety training sessions for traders, focusing on critical areas such as proper ventilation, fuel storage, and electrical safety. Utilize posters, flyers, local media, and social platforms to disseminate information about generator hazards and the importance of safety practices. Government should involve market leaders and trader associations in promoting and monitoring adherence to safety practices, leveraging the traders' positive attitudes towards safety. And they should also increase market inspections and enforce penalties for non-compliance with safety regulations to ensure adherence to safety standards.
