ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge of and sanitation behaviors of undergraduates in halls of residence, University of Benin. In order to actualize the purpose of this study, six research questions were raised.
The descriptive survey design was adopted in conducting the study. The main instrument for the study was a self-structured questionnaire. The sample size of the study was 100 respondents. The instrument’s validity was established by giving it to the supervisor and two other experts in the field of the research study. The reliability of the instrument was established using the split-half method of reliability which yielded a coefficient of 0.726. The data gathered from the questionnaires were subjected to analysis using frequency counts and simple percentages. The questionnaires were administered by the researcher with the help of two other assistants. The target population were residence of undergraduate hostels, Ugbowo campus.
The study revealed that knowledge 0f sanitation was high, sanitation behaviors were positive and practices were high, based on this, a few recommendations were made and amongst these recommendations are:
More environmental awareness should be carried out by health personnels regularly in other to fully inculcate the right sanitation behaviors on students in the halls of residence and the University community at large.
Students should be properly oriented by the hostels’ administrative and hall executives on how to adhere to living an adequate sanitary lifestyle.
The school management should provide and maintain hostel facilities in a way that there will be adequate water supply, more toilets and bathroom facilities.
