KNOWLEDGE ATTITUDES AND PRACTICES OF SELF MEDICATION AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of selfmedication among undergraduate students in the university of Benin, Edo state, Nigeria. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. The descriptive survey research design was used in this study. The population consist of all the 43,862 Undergraduate students in the university of Benin. The simple random sampling techniques was used to select 5 facilities of the 15 faculties in the university of Benin. An adequate questionnaire was developed after a proper literature review, the level of validity and reliability of the questionnaire was assessed and it was then administered to elicit needed responses from the respondents. Descriptive statistics (Table, percentages, frequency) to assess and interpret the questionnaire. The results obtained indicated that Undergraduate students have a high knowledge on self-medication, their attitudes towards self-medication is high, and the practices of selfmedication among undergraduate students in the university of Benin is high. The research concluded that the students have an inadequate knowledge about self-medication, and suggested that the school should provide appropriate knowledge on self-medication that will positively influence their attitudes towards self-medication and practices towards self-medication.
