ABSTRACT
Prostate cancer is cancer of the prostate. Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancerrelated deaths among males globally The study was conducted to assess the knowledge and perception of prostate cancer screening among male students in selected departments in University of Benin. The objective of the study was to determine the knowledge of students on prostate cancer screening, to ascertain the student’s perception of prostate cancer screening, and to determine if the student’s perception of prostate cancer screening is affected by their age. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was used for the study. The subjects of the study consisted of two hundred and twenty-eight male students in the selected departments in University of Benin. A researcher constructed questionnaire was administered to students and 220 questionnaires were retrieved. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics- frequency and percentages. Pearson chi-square was used to test for relationship between students’ knowledge and perception of life prostate cancer screening and also the relationship between the student’s perception of prostate cancer screening and their age. The study showed that 57.8% have low knowledge, 21.1% have moderate knowledge, while 21.1% have high knowledge of prostate cancer screening. Furthermore, the grand mean score of overall response from the respondents to all item was computed as 3.38 which indicated that the respondents generally exhibited a good perception towards prostate cancer screening services. In conclusion, Knowledge of prostate cancer screening among male students in University of Benin was low. Majority of the respondents had positive perception of prostate cancer while few had negative perception of prostate cancer screening. There was no significant relationship between the students’ knowledge and perception of prostate cancer screening. There was an association between the students’ perception of prostate cancer screening and their age.
