ABSTRACT
"Tele-eye care is a form of telemedicine that focuses on delivering eye care services to patients using telecommunications technology and digital medical equipment.The study was aimed at assessing the level of knowledge and attitude of tele-eye care among students of optometry, University of Benin. The research was carried out using cross-sectional study with the aidof aquestionnaire. Descriptive analysis was used to determine the mean response for knowledge and awareness, while chi-square was used for comparative analysis. 268 students of the Department of Optometry in clinical classes (400l-600l), comprising 158 females and 110 males, aged between <25years and >30 years with the aid of a questionnaire Data analysis showed that 95.5% of the respondents agreed on having knowledge of tele-eye care with a mean score of 3.79. Also, 89.6% of the respondents showed positive attitude towards tele-eye care with a mean score of 3.55. 256 (95.5%) respondents had a good knowledge of tele-eye care, and 240 (89.6%) of the respondents had positive attitude towards tele-eye care based on gender and educational level, respectively. There was significant difference in response on knowledge and attitude based on sex, age and educational level (p<0.05). In conclusion, the students had a good knowledge of tele-eye care as well as a positive attitude towards tele-eye care. However, there is a need to close the tele optometry knowledge gap among clinical students.
