ABSTRACT

The study examined the effect of job stress on bank employees’ performance in Edo State. It specifically examined workload, limited career advancement opportunities, and work family imbalance, in terms of their effect on employee performance. The study was conducted using a correlational survey research design. The population of the study comprised of bank employees in Benin City, Edo State. Three banks were selected with a total population of 545 employees. The sample size was 231 with an allowance of 10% addition.   Questionnaire was the main research instrument. Data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. It was found that limited career advancement opportunities had a significant negative impact on employee performance in the banking industry; workload stress did not have a significant impact on employee performance in the banking industry; work family imbalance did not have a significant impact on employee performance in the banking industry. It was concluded that the findings of the study have significant implications for bank employees, who are likely to experience higher levels of job stress due to work-family conflict, work-life balance, declining physical and cognitive abilities, and increased workload and responsibility. This can lead to decreased performance, which can negatively impact their careers and overall well-being. It was further recommended that the implementation of stress management interventions, provide resources for work-life balance, develop demographic-specific support programs among other.
