JOB PROSPECTS FOR LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE (LIS) GRADUATES IN THE NORTH-CENTRAL AND SOUTH-SOUTH GEO-POLITICAL ZONES.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the job prospects for Library and Information Science (LIS) graduates in Nigeria, specifically within the North-Central and South-South geo-political zones. It examines the dynamic evolution of the LIS profession, emphasizing the influence of technological advancements and the diverse roles LIS graduates occupy across various industries. The study also evaluates the alignment between LIS education and employment opportunities. Utilizing a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from 100 respondents through structured questionnaires. The findings reveal that despite the wide range of career opportunities available to LIS graduates, they face challenges such as outdated curricula, insufficient technological integration, and societal undervaluation. The study highlights the importance of continuous professional development, the integration of emerging technologies into LIS curricula, and the need for strategic policy interventions to enhance employability. Among the suggestions are encouraging industry-academia partnerships, improving instruction in digital literacy, and encouraging the development of multidisciplinary skills. The study intends to solve these gaps in order to enhance workforce sustainability and preparedness in Nigeria's LIS industry.
