ABSTRACT.

The mode of transmission of Vibrio bacteria is dependent on the specific species. Human diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria of the Vibrio genus can be divided into cholera and non-cholera infection. The freshwater, estuarine, and oceanic environments are autochthonous with Vibrio species. High morbidity and fatality rates are linked to cholera, an acute diarrheal illness brought on by the gram-negative bacillus Vibrio cholerae of serogroups 01 and 0139 . The membrane filtration method also known as millipore filter technique method is used for the assessment of water quality.Thiosulfate-Citrate-Bile-Salt Sucrose Agar, or TCBS Agar, is a selective culture medium used in microbiology laboratories to isolate Vibrio species. The morphological features, the physicochemical properties were observed, biochemical test were also conducted. This research work proved that Vibrio spp, especifically Vibrio Cholerae and Vibrio paraharmolyticus were identified from Ikpoba river, well water and reservoir water samples.  Though according to WHO the physico-chemical parameters of the tested water samples were within permissible limits, the presence of Vibrio in water renders the water harmful. Although the most important role in the protection of water resources belongs to public and private institutions that provide water, education also has an important role.
