ABSTRACT
The environmental impact of petroleum exploration, production, refining, and transportation is a severe issue in both developed and developing nations. The aim of this study was to identify bacteria associated from soils contaminated with engine oil in mechanic workshops around. The results of total hydrocarbon utilizing bacteria count after two(2) days ranged from 2.49 x 102 to 4.00 × 102 in all the mechanic workshop, After six(6) days of incubation ranged from 2.46 × 102 to 3.55 × 102 .The log range was between 0.09 x 102 - 0.45 x 102 . while the percentage range was between 18.35% - 64.46%.The isolated bacteria were Klebsiella xytoca, Bacillus subtilis, E. coli and Enterobacter aerogenes. E.coli (40.00%) had highest percentage of occurrence followed by Bacillus subtilis (30.00%), Enterobacter aerogens (20.00%) while Klebsiella oxytoca (10.00%) had the least occurrence.
