ABSTRACT
The isolation and characterization of microorganisms in the saliva of female students in Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, Nigeria was investigated. 50 samples were collected from female students aseptically using sterile swabs and analyzed using standard Microbiological techniques for the presence of microorganisms. The population of bacteria were within the range of 31 cfu/cm2 to 270 cfu/cm2 .The percentage of Gram- positive (84.1%) oral bacterial isolates in the oral swab culture of the studied participants was found to be significantly higher than that of Gram- negative (15.9%). The identified microorganism were Streptococcus viridians with the highest frequency of occurrence of 62.9% followed by Salmonella typhi(7.9%) Enterococcus feacalis(5.9%), Staphylococcus epidermidis(5.6%),Streptococcus pyogens(5.2%),Klebseiella pneumonia(4.5%), and Enterobacter spp(4.2%), and Staphylococcus aureus with the lowest frequency of3.8%. The outcomes of this project provided valuable insights into the oral microbiome of female students in Benson Idahosa University, shedding light on the prevalence and diversity of microorganisms in their saliva.
