ABSTRACT
The usage of petroleum hydrocarbon products increases, the soil contamination with diesel and engine oils is becoming one of the major environmental problems. The isolation and characterisation of the hydrocarbon degrading bacterial and the gravimetric analysis was carried out. The percentage of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria of the soils were 27.8%,12.5%, 34.3%, 41.3% and 50%. The bacterial isolate that was able to degrade crude oil were Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Micrococcus sp. The gravimetric analysis revealed that isolates were capable of utilizing 70% to 80% of used engine oil, hence responsible for oil degradation. The result obtained demonstrates the potential for oil bioremediation of these isolates.
