INVESTIGATION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADULT BASIC EDUCATION MANAGEMENT IN OREDO GOVERNMENT AREA.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the development of adult basic education management in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study four (4) research questions and one hypothesis were raised and answered guided the study.

The census sampling technique was employed to select the samples for the study due to the small population size. The population of the study were all adult education practitioners such as facilitators, programme planners and managers of Adult basic education programme in Edo State including lecturers in the Department of Adult and Non Formal Education in Edo State and the sample size was made up of 51 respondents. The instrument that was used for the data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “Development of Adult Basic Education Management Questionnaire (DABEMQ)”. The constructed questionnaire for the study was presented to the project supervisor to confirm for face and construct validity. The instrument was validated using the Expert Judgement approach. The data collected through the questionnaire were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques such as tables, frequency count, percentages, mean score and standard deviation to answer the research questions while Pearson r was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 significant level.

Findings of the study revealed that human resources, physical infrastructure, instructional materials and to lesser degree financial resources are the resources deployed in the management of adult basic education programmes in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The study further indicated that limited funding and financial resources, shortage of qualified facilitators and support staff, inadequate physical infrastructure and facilities, and insufficient availability of instructional materials and resources are challenges facing the effective management of Adult Basic Education Programme in Oredo Local Government Area,  Edo State. Based on the findings, it was therefore recommended among others that since adult basic education programme has been found to be of significant benefits, there is need for a well-structured partnerships and collaboration between government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations in managing adult basic education in order to enhance programme effectiveness  in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. It was further recommended and that Oredo Local Government authorities and in extension Edo State Government should address the challenges facing the effective management of adult basic education programmes.
