Abstract

Gridding, in the context of geospatial data and spatial analysis is the process of interpolating data values from discrete points or irregularly spaced data onto a regular grid. This project was aimed at investigating the performance of survey instruments in volume determination. The study was conducted by acquiring elevation data from the study area with varying terrain with a grid cell size of 1m. The collected data was processed and analyzed using various software and techniques to determine the volume accuracy of the gridding method. Maps of the enclave which included digital elevation models, contour maps, triangular irregular network maps and 3D model maps, were created in Geographic Information Systems and geographic coordinate system (WGS 1984 UTM zone 31N) and the calculated volume which was required to fill the enclave measured 15,588.56𝑚3 , 15,422.66𝑚3 , and 15,763.05𝑚3 , as determined from the data gotten from the Total Station, GNSS, and the Automatic Level, respectively. The conventional level instrument and total station offered higher measurement precision in comparison to GNSS. However, the choice of technique may depend on the specific project criteria, making any of them a viable option.
