ABSTRACT

Soil aggregation and the stability of soil aggregates are critical factors governing soil health, productivity, and ecosystem functioning. This study investigates and compares the aggregate stability of two mapping units at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Nigeria. Soil samples were collected from five depths (0-200 cm) in each mapping unit and analyzed for physical properties like bulk density, porosity, texture, organic matter content, and aggregate stability using techniques such as wet sieving and mean weight diameter calculations. Chemical properties were also analyzed. The results revealed spatial variations in aggregate stability across the soil profiles (P1: 0.56 – 0.69 and P2: 0.61 – 0.68), as influenced by organic matter content, clay minerals, biological factors like roots and fungal hyphae, and soil management practices playing key roles. The interactions between aggregate stability, bulk density (P1: 1.4 – 1.47kg/m3 , P2: 1.4 – 1.47kg/m3 ), total porosity (P1: 44.16 - 47.14%, P2: 43.1 - 47.17%), and depth were further explored, highlighting the intricate relationships governing soil structure and functioning. The findings emphasize the importance of maintaining and enhancing soil aggregate stability through appropriate management strategies for sustainable agriculture, erosion control, water management, and overall soil health.
