ABSTRACT

Mercury chloride, a crystalline white solid used as an experimental reagent, poses environmental and health risks due to anthropogenic activities. A study investigates its impact on liver damage in Wistar rats and explores the protective effect of Newbouldia laevis. Mercury chloride (HgCl2) is an inorganic chemical compound of mercury and chlorine, employed as a laboratory reagent. It is a highly toxic white crystalline solid, no longer utilized for medicinal purposes due to mercury toxicity and the availability of superior treatments. Newbouldia laevis is prized for its medicinal and economic uses, with various parts like leaves, bark, and roots utilized in traditional medicine to treat ailments such as malaria, gastrointestinal issues, and respiratory problems. The plant's medicinal properties have attracted attention for potential pharmaceutical applications. The experiment aims to investigate the ameliorative potential of Newbouldia laevis on mercury chloride-induced hepatotoxicity in adult Wistar rats. Eighteen adult Wistar rats weighing between 160g and 200g were divided into six groups (A-F), each consisting of four Wistar rats with randomized patterns, all weighed prior to and during administration. The rats received simultaneous administration of mercury chloride and Newbouldia laevis for twenty-eight days. Mercury chloride administration induced significant changes in body and liver weights. Histological analysis revealed vasodilation, vascular stenosis, vascular congestion, and periportal infiltrates of inflammatory cells, indicating liver damage. However, co-administration of Newbouldia laevis mitigated these deteriorative effects, demonstrating its protective role against mercury chloride toxicity.
