INVESTIGATING THE EFFECT OF PYRENACANTHA STAUDTII EXTRACT ON THE LIVER OF ADULT WISTAR RATS.

ABSTRACT

This study explored the effects of Pyrenacantha staudtii extract on the liver of adult Wistar rats, comprising six distinct groups, each with varying dosage regimens. The control group (Group A) received standard feed and water. The treatment groups (Groups B to F) were administered the extract at doses of 100mg/kg bw (Group B), 200mg/kg bw (Group C), 400mg/kg bw (Group D), 800mg/kg bw (Group E), and 1600mg/kg bw (Group F) over a 5 weeks period. Comprehensive liver function tests and histological assessments were conducted to evaluate the extract's impact. The findings revealed a dose-dependent hepatostimulation, evidenced by elevated Aspartate Transaminase (AST) and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) levels in Groups C, D, and F, indicating hepatocyte and Kupffer cell activation. Remarkably, Alanine Transaminase (ALT) levels remained stable across all groups, suggesting the absence of severe liver damage. Total Bilirubin (TB) and Tuberculosis (TBIL) levels displayed no significant changes, implying an absence of bilirubin-related complications. Moreover, consistent body metrics were observed across all groups, indicating overall health stability. This study sheds light on the intricate relationship between Pyrenacantha staudtii extract dosage, liver function markers, and histological changes, offering insights into its potential therapeutic applications.
