ABSTRACT
This study was designed to investigate the challenges facing the teaching of social studies in junior Secondary school in Edo State: A case study of Egor local government Area of Edo State. Four research questions were raised and analyzed for the purpose of the study. A random sampling technique was used using two hundred (125) students resident in Egor local government area of Edo state. The data were collected with questionnaire instrument and analyzed using mean and simple percentage.
The result revealed that; lack of qualified teachers affect the learning of social studies. Lack of instructional material affect the teaching and learning process of social studies. Lack of conducive learning environment affect the teaching and learning of social studies. inappropriate method of teaching affect the teaching and learning of social studies.
Based on the results, it was recommended that the Government as well as school administrators should implement robustrecruitment strategies to attract qualified Social studies teachers which couldinclude offering competitive salaries, benefits and incentives for teacherswillingtowork. Schoolsshouldtakeasprioritytheacquisitionofup-to-dateandcomprehensiveinstructionalmaterials,aswellasinvestingindigitalresourcesand online platforms that can provide teachers and students with access to abroaderrangeof educationalcontent. Effort should be made to reduce class sizes to ensure a more conducive learning environment where teachers can provide individualized attention to students. Teachers should be encouraged to adopt student centered teaching methods that can promote active learning and critical thinking.
