ABSTRACT

The research looked on women's leadership possibilities and gender inequities at the University of Benin in Benin City. Five (5) research questions were presented in order to conduct this investigation. The descriptive survey approach was chosen as the study's design.
All undergraduate students studying political science in all departments at the University of Benin in Benin City during the 2023–2024 academic year made up the study's population. 200 undergraduate political students, 100 from each of the University of Benin's 300 and 400 level programs, were chosen at random from the Department of Political Sciences (POL) and the Department of Educational Management (DEM). Respondents' information was gathered using a standardized questionnaire. A professor from the Department of Educational Management verified the research tool. Survey data were subjected to statistical analysis. Following analysis, the findings were presented in tables that included the choice taken along with response frequencies and percentages.
The results showed that, on average, there is not much of a gender gap against women at the University of Benin in Benin City. Nonetheless, women continue to be notably underrepresented in political opportunities and decision-making within the university, academic leadership roles, academic and administrative positions, gender inequality and bias in education impact women's political engagement within the university, and much more. A few suggestions were offered to address these issues. Women should strive to overcome development barriers with great determination, perseverance, unbreakable solidarity, and genuine desires to conquer the natural challenges of their origin, among other things. It was suggested that all cultural and customary practices that discriminate, subordinate, oppress, and hinder women's participation in leadership and decision-making be abolished. Equal rights and opportunities for men and women should be provided in all aspects of life. Additionally, gender awareness and leadership training should be created for aspiring women leaders on campus.
