ABSTRACT
This research project delves into the intricate dynamics of internal party crises within the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and their impact on electoral success, with a specific focus on the 2023 presidential election in Rivers State, Nigeria. The study employs a comprehensive analysis of data, including tables and correlation findings, to draw significant conclusions.The research reveals the prevalence of internal party conflicts during the 2023 election, with a substantial number of respondents acknowledging their existence. These conflicts primarily stem from power struggles among party leaders, severely affecting party unity, organizational efficiency, and overall cohesiveness.Furthermore, the study sheds light on the profound influence of internal conflicts on the PDP's electoral strategies. Respondents indicate that these conflicts played a pivotal role in shaping the party's campaign strategies, showcasing the party's adaptability in response to internal dynamics.Efforts to manage these internal conflicts through mediation and reconciliation processes received positive feedback from a considerable portion of respondents, emphasizing the importance of effective conflict resolution mechanisms within political parties. However, opinions vary concerning the effectiveness of these measures among party members.The most notable impact of internal conflicts is observed in their influence on voter behavior and electoral outcomes. Respondents overwhelmingly assert that these conflicts led to decreased voter confidence, lower voter turnout, and a decline in electoral support for the PDP. Additionally, internal conflicts constrained the party's ability to implement an effective electoral strategy, resulting in a less successful election outcome.Correlation analysis further substantiates these findings, demonstrating significant relationships between internal conflicts, voter confidence, voter turnout, and electoral performance. It becomes evident that increased internal conflicts have adverse effects on these crucial aspects of the electoral process.In summary, this research underscores the significance of understanding and effectively managing internal party conflicts for political parties, especially in the context of electoral success. The findings emphasize the need for strategies that promote internal cohesion, enhance conflict resolution mechanisms, and address party members' concerns. Additionally, the research provides valuable insights for policymakers and political stakeholders seeking to bolster the democratic process in Nigeria by mitigating the negative impact of internal party conflicts on electoral outcomes.
