INTERMITTENT FAST INDUCED VARIATION ON PLASMA FACTOR VIII CONCENTRATION AMONG YOUNG ADULTS

ABSTRACT

Plasma factor viii also called anti-hemophilic factor is one of the blood coagulation factors and is vital in the formation of blood clot during bleeding time to stop bleeding. Intermittent fasting is deprivation from food within specific intervals, usually voluntary and common among religious persons and people who aim at having lower body weights. Various research has shown intermittent fast results in reduced blood sugar levels. The aim of this study was to investigate the variation in plasma factor viii concentration during intermittent fasting periods in young adults. This study involved sixty (60) apparently healthy adults both males and females aged 18-30years and divided into two phases; the fasting phase as test and non-fasting phase as control. During the fasting phase, participants were deprived of food and water for 12hours while the control phase involved maintaining regular eating pattern. 5ml of blood was collected via the cubital fossa and 4.5ml of blood was dispensed into 0.5ml of sodium citrate anticoagulated bottles then analysis were carried out. The results showed a decrease in glucose levels at the fasting phase and a decrease in plasma factor viii concentration which was statistically significant with the p-values being less than 0.05 (p<0.05). In conclusion, this study reveals that there is a significant decrease in the concentration of plasma factor viii during intermittent fasting periods. Although there is a significant decrease in the concentration of plasma factor viii, it is not significant enough to cause any medical or health conditions and hence should not be likened to hemophilia which has been shown to be hereditary and congenital from various research works.
