INTERGROUP RELATIONS BETWEEN KWALE AND HER NEIGHBOURS 1991-2015

SUMMARY

The term intergroup relations refer to both individual interactions involving members from different groups and the collective behaviour of groups in interaction with other groups, at either the intra or inter organizational level. The classic definition of intergroup relations was originally provided by Sherif in 1966 who suggested: Whenever individuals belonging to one group interact, collectively or individually, with another group or its members in terms of their group identification, we have an instance of intergroup behaviour.¹ Intergroup relations imply therefore, the existence of mutually exclusive groups that are in constant interaction with one another.

This study discusses the socio-economic intergroup relations between Kwale and her Warri and Aboh neighbours from 1991-2015. The issue of inter-group relations in Nigeria is not new as it has attracted scholarly attention for some decades now. As recurring as this subject may have been to researchers of inter-group relations in Nigeria, it cannot be abandoned, because the nature and dimension which it has taken has left numerous impact.² It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the socio-economic intergroup relations between Kwale and Warri on one hand and Kwale and Aboh on the other hand between the period of 1991-2015
