ABSTRACT
The research was carried out to examine the intergenerational trauma in families and social work intervention strategies, to use the knowledge gained about the causes and effects of intergenerational trauma in families, and how intergenerational trauma affects attachment relationships in families to inform public policy, social work intervention strategies and community based interventions to reduce intergenerational trauma and it's effects in families, to identify the effects of intergenerational trauma on families in Egor Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State. The methodology of this study is descriptive in nature. However, a sample size of 200 was drawn from the population using simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using questionnaires and were analyzed. From the analysis, it was found that the causes associated with intergenerational trauma in families are war, domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse and also significant trauma or adverse experiences in the past, trauma that influences parenting practices are all impacts of intergenerational trauma on parenting practices and attachment relationships. It was recommended that government should provide access to trauma informed counselling, support groups and other resources that help family members process and heal from the effects of intergenerational trauma.
