ABSTRACT
This purpose of this study is to investigate the integration of information and communication technology into the teaching of motor skills in the University of Benin. Specifically, the objectives of the study include; to determine the influence of ICT on the teaching of motor skills, to determine the relationship between ICT and Athletes performance, determine the relationship between ICT and Athletes participation in motor skills, and to determine the influence of ICT on the job performance of coaches. Four research questions were raised to guide the study.
The descriptive survey research method was adopted for the study. The population for the study consisted of all the coaches in the University of Benin sports complex and the lecturers in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science in the University of Benin. The sample size of the study comprised of 30 coaches in the University of Benin sports complex and lecturers in the department of Human kinetics and sports science. The validity of the study was determined by the researcher’s supervisor and two other lecturers in the department of human kinetics and sports science. The Cronbach alpha statistics was used to determine the reliability of the instrument by administering the questionnaire (test instrument) once to the respondents to which they obliged responding to. A correlation coefficient value of 0.67 was obtained showing that the instrument was reliable. The data was analyzed using descriptive Statistics such as frequency, percentages, mean and Standard deviation to answer each research question.
The study conducted an in-depth investigation of the integration of ICT in to the teaching of motor skills in University of Benin, Benin city, Edo State. Addressing Research Question 1, the investigation revealed that the use of ICT tools in education and training positively influence the teaching of motor skills by providing innovative and interactive methods that the coaches and lecturers can employ in their classes to complement the traditional method of instructions. Research Question 2 revealed that there exist a strong and positive relationship between ICT and athlete’s performance. The use of ICT tools in motor skills instruction will to a large extent improve athletes’ performance. Research Question 3 revealed that there exist a relationship between ICT tools and athletes participation in motor activities. This shows that the use of ICT tools in motor skills instruction allows for the creation of interactive learning experiences that can make practice more engaging and dynamic, leading to increased students participation. This interactivity can engage students and result in deeper learning. Research Question 4 revealed that the use of ICT tools influence the job performance of coaches and lecturers by making them more efficient and effective in carrying out their duties as well as reduce the work load posed on them as the feedback of their students performances are gotten immediately with the help of these tools which enable them to effectively plan training modules for the student athletes and plan lesson.
