ABSTRACT
The security of any nation is paramount in attaining self-sufficiency and development in any country and it is also widely acknowledged that countries formulate and implement policies to further ensure the continuous safety of lives and property which is their most essential national interests. To show the nexus on how insecurity and in particular insurgency impacts on the sustainable developmental drive in Nigeria; the study formulated the following research questions; how is insurgency impacting Nigeria’s national development? What are the factors underlying the rise and apparent sustained activities of insurgency across the country? What are the measures currently been adopted by government to combat the scourge of insurgency? In an attempt to answer the aforementioned questions, the study adopted a qualitative methodology through the use of historical content analysis to show the trajectory of insecurity in Nigeria. Detailing various forms and cases of insecurity and how they have impacted negatively on national development. The study duly recommended that it is imperative for Nigeria to identify and collaborate with neighboring countries, especially countries that share borders with us, to form strategic security networks of intelligence forces to check illegality across borders and help fight insurgency. Cameroon, Chad, Benin Republic and Niger Republic are important in the fight against insecurity in Nigeria. Doing this is by no means a straight jacketed solution to insecurity in Nigeria but it will help to set the country on the right path towards national development and improved economic fortune and guarantee prospects of even development.
