ABSTRACT

The discourse on terrorism is indeed a very broad topic, despite the fact that its usage in international relations is more recent. As a form of insurgency, there is among others one major aim of any terrorist group irrespective of location or orientation and that is to instill fear on a large section of the society; and essentially, the subject matter in view have sufficiently carried out this plan in Nigeria. This research work therefore have exposed the unforeseen and even obvious dilemmas as it relates to terrorism and regional security in Africa using the Boko Haram insurgency as a classical case study. Boko Haram insurgency has become a dangerous multifaceted problem. Although it initially emerged as a localized Nigerian problem, it has overtime transformed into a regional threat. The situation, hence, demands the political will and the articulation of a comprehensive strategy to address its root causes and dangerous dynamics, focusing on best and possible approaches that could erode the appeal of Boko Haram’s insidious ideology inhibit opportunities for recruitment and radicalization. Little wonder the research work also provides information on regional response to the insurgent activities.
