ABSTRACT

The study set out to use infrared spectroscopy to identify and characterize the components and structural features of the test sample sodium heparin, the use of  Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) was able to identify the test sample as sodium heparin a heparin like substance and it showed similar characteristics when it was compared with the standard heparin, analar grade samples was used for the process, the work was carried out in a clean environment, the glass wares and materials used were all dried in an oven at 800C before synthesis procedures took place.0.5g of the sample was measured accurately and dispensed into a volumetric flask and filled to 100ml using distilled water,10microliter was pipetted into bottles for sample heparin(crystalline white) and dried at 80oC in the oven and it was then characterised by an infrared spectroscopy.
