ABSTRACT
The study examined the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) application on school management and record keeping in Basic Education in Ikopba Okha Local Government Area. Also of interest in this work was the extent to which ICT applications were used in the schools, the records kept in schools and the level of effectiveness of the ICT applications on students’ record keeping. The difference in the relationship between ICT application and record keeping based on size of school and ownership was also an area of interest. To guide the study, six research questions were raised, three were answered directly and three were hypothesized and tested at 0.05 alpha level.
The study adopted a descriptive survey based on correctional research design. The population consisted of all the public and private junior secondary schools in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. Two hundred respondents made up the sample of the study. Principals, bursars and class teachers were purposively selected from 20 public and 20 private schools. Questionnaires which were used to collect information from the respondents was titled ‘’ICT Application and Record Keeping Questionnaire (IARKQ). Data collected were analysed with mean, standard deviation, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (Pearson r) and Fisher’s z- statistics.
The findings revealed among other things that ICT applications were used occasionally for record keeping and school management. No significant difference was found in the relationship between ICT application and record keeping prevalent in schools based on ownership and size of school. It was, therefore recommended, among others things that school managers such as principals, bursars, and teachers should be encouraged to use ICT application for students’ record keeping and school management.
