ABSTRACT
The study was attempted to analyze the influence of TikTok distraction on students acquisition of computer science skills in the University of Benin. The design adopted for this study was a descriptive survey method. Four research questions were raised to guide this study: How does the use of TikTok constitute distraction among computer science students in the University of Benin? What are the behavioral patterns of TikTok addicted among computer science students? Does time spent on TikTok influence the overall academic performance of computer science education students? To what extent does TikTok addiction influence computer science skill acquisition among computer science students?
The population of the study consisted of all 100, 200, 300 and 400 level computer science education undergraduate’s students in University of Benin which amounts to one hundred and thirty (130) respondents. The sample size for this study was a total number of sixty-five (65) respondents, fifteen (15) of which are from 100 level, eighteen (18), sixteen (16) and sixteen (16) from 400 level, all randomly selected. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain data from the respondents. Data collected from the survey was statistically analyzed. After analysis, the results were displayed on a table showing frequencies and percentages of responses.
The findings of this research showed that challenges such as procrastination, poor time management and delaying critical study are crucial challenges for the aquisition of computer science skills. Based on careful examination of the analyst and data given in this study, The University of Benin should promote and facilitate alternative activities that engage students in productive and fulfilling ways. These could include coding competitions, hackathons, tech clubs, and other extracurricular activities that foster a sense of achievement and community without the need for social media.
