ABSTRACT
The study investigated the influence of teaching phonology on spoken English of secondary school students: a case study of Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and answered. The research design adopted for this study is the descriptive survey research design. The sample size for the study was made up of 100 students which were randomly selected from each school in the local government. Using the simple random sampling technique, 5 students each were randomly selected from the 20 public secondary schools in the local government, thus making a total sample size of 100 respondents. The findings from the study include that there is high level of students’ proficiency in spoken English in secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. It was concluded that there is a significant impact of teaching phonology on spoken English among secondary school students in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. It was therefore recommended among others that the Ministry of Education should integrate real-world examples and case studies into the History curriculum to make it more engaging and relevant to students' interests.
