ABSTRACT

The study examined the influence of teachers’ skills as a determinant of student learning of History in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area.  In order to achieve the objectives of the stuidy, four  research questions were raised to guide the study.

The study adopted a descriptive  survey research design. The population of this study consist of History teachers from public secondary school and Senior secondary school students offering History in the same area. A sample size consisting of 1150 (one hundred anf fifteen) respondents (students and teahers) were used for this study. The purposive  sampling technique was used to select the students.The Instrument for data collection in this study is structured questionnaire developed by the researcher. The data collected was presented and analyzed using percentage and mean(×), standard deviation(SD).

Findings from the study revealed the key skills that History teachers need to teach effectively in secondary schools is effective classroom management, the qualifications and professional training of History teachers affect students' performance in History, the teaching methods commonly used by History teachers in secondary schools is the Lecture based teaching method and students have a good perception of  their History teachers' effectiveness in engaging them with the subject. Based on the findings, it was therefore recommended amongst others that Teachers should try other approaches that will be best suited to the individuality of the learners. Theyshould also establish a positive relationship with their students. This will help them to be great managers of the classroom.
