ABSTRACT
The study assessed the influence of stress on principals’ job performance in public senior secondary schools in Edo State. Five research questions were raised to guide the study.
The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The population of the study was 140 principals in public senior secondary schools in Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State. There was no sampling as the entire population was used for the study. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument used was validated by three experts. Chronbach Alpha method was used to compute reliability of the instrument which yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.76. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation.
From the results of the analysis, it was concluded that the job stress indicators that influence principals’ job performance in public senior secondary schools in Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State are workload, role ambiguity, role conflict, task demand pressure and inadequate facilities. Consequently, it was recommended that development and implementation of stress management strategies for principals should be a major option for effective and efficient public school administration. Provision of adequate facilities to public senior secondary schools by relevant government agencies and spirited individuals/corporate organizations should be consistent. Furthermore, principals should be encouraged with extra allowance for their excess job functions as to reduce brain drain in public senior secondary schools. Finally, recommendations were made for further studies such as determinants influencing principals’ job performance in public senior secondary schools.
