ABSTRACT
This study evaluates the influence of social media on dressing style and culture of students of the University of Benin. Although, technological advancement has impressively changed the world and its impact has remained unlimited but the problem remains the unscrupulous use of the internet for anti-social activities than academic activities which has become a growing concern in Nigeria institutions. The tertiary institutions in Nigeria are struggling with uncultured and indecent dressings amongst the students. The objective of this research work is to find out the influence of social media on dressing style and culture of undergraduates and to also discover possible solution to this alarming effect. The survey method was used by the researcher as instruments were administered to the respondents to gather information relevant to this study. The researcher discovered that there is a greater chance of being influenced by the content. 69% of the entire respondents agreed that social media truly influences students’ dressing style and culture while 66 % of the respondents agreed in subsequent question that the social media platforms influence students’ dressing to a great extent. Conclusively, there is a greater chance of students being influenced by the content of social media as agreed by larger percentage of the students discovered in the findings. Hence, it is highly recommended that students turn of social media notifications as the best means of controlling social media addictions. This is because the notifications constantly remind them that there are things going on in the online world and they fear they are missing out. It therefore helps to curtail the influence on their dressing and lifestyle and as well makes it easier for them to concentrate on daily productive tasks.
