ABSTRACT

In some of our Universities today, there is an increased influence of social media and its usage on her students. This study aims to examine the influence of social media on the body image and self-esteem of youths in Benin City, Nigeria. It can be difficult to determine and is often based on assumptions, which is why this study investigates the influence of social media on the body image and self-esteem among students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) living on both campuses on a sample size of 398.  A survey was conducted with 398 participants, and the results indicate that social media has a significant influence on the way young people view themselves and their bodies. The majority of participants reported feeling pressure to look a certain way, and many expressed concerns about their body image and self-esteem. The research aims to understand the extent to which UNIBEN students are exposed to social media content that shapes their perceptions of body image and self-esteem. Additionally, it explores the perceptions of students towards these social media portrayals and the impact it has. Through a comprehensive literature review, the study examines substantial evidence linking social media to body image issues and self-esteem concerns. This research work also makes use of  Objectification Theory, Self-Determination Theory and Social Comparison Theory to back up its claims. This study therefore recommends that through recognizing the impact of social media content, we can take positive approach to its usage to make the world a safe space for University students. The findings also suggest that social media may be having a negative impact on the mental and physical health of young people.
