ABSTRACT
The study investigated the influence of social media on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in Egor Local Government of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised to guide the study. The design adopted for this study is the descriptive survey method.
The population of this study consisted of all the 13 public senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area (Edo South Senatorial District) of Edo State as at December 2024. A total 150 SS2 were randomly selected from the LGA. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from respondents. The research instrument was validated by lecturer of the Department of Educational Management. Data collected from the survey was statistically analyzed. After analysis, results were displayed on tables showing frequencies and percentages of responses, including the decision made.
Based on the findings, it was discovered that students have varying reasons why they use social media, the level senior secondary school students’ use social media in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State is moderately high, social media has both negative and positive impacts on the academic achievement of students, and there is a significant relationship between social media usage and students’ academic performance in public senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. It was recommended that government, policy makers and stakeholders in education should consider the possibility of evolving a policy on teenagers’ exposure to social media, parents should discourage their children from spending too much time on their phones whenever they are at home, and, when necessary, obstinate children should be disciplined, students should decrease their introduction to social media and give careful consideration to their studies, etc.
