ABSTRACT
This study examines the influence of social media on students' reading culture in universities, with a focus on the University of Benin. The research aims to investigate the impact of social media usage on students' engagement in reading activities, the extent to which peer interactions on social media influence reading habits, and how students perceive the role of social media in shaping their attitudes towards reading. A survey of 30 undergraduate students reveals that excessive social media use negatively affects reading habits and academic engagement. The study recommends promoting responsible social media use, encouraging reading activities, and providing resources and incentives to support students' academic success. The findings suggest that educators, policymakers, and researchers must take steps to address the decline of reading culture among students and promote healthy social media habits to improve academic outcomes.
