ABSTRACT

This study examined the Influence of reality television shows on fashion choices among selected fashion designers in the Benin metropolis. The goal of the study was to reveal the extent to which reality TV shows influence fashion designers in the Benin metropolis, find out the extent to which fashion designers' fashion choices vary greatly on their style, highlight the impact reality television shows have on fashion designers in Benin metropolis for the sustainability and ethical considerations in the fashion industry. To provide a theoretical framework, the study was anchored on Uses and Gratifications Theory and Cultivation Theory. Survey research design was adopted with a sample size of 346, and a questionnaire as the primary data collection instrument. 346 copies of the designed questionnaires were distributed. From this number, 6 were screened out for inaccurate filling, and 340 were used, representing a useful rate of 99% through three stages using the simple random, stratified, and simple sampling procedures. Findings from the analysis of the data gathered showed that Fashion designers in Benin metropolis frequently feature on reality television shows, with over 70% reporting watching these programs often or very often. The study concludes that the majority of designers perceive reality TV as shaping public perception of fashion and influencing industry trends. Moreover, there is a widespread belief that these shows influence designers' creativity and fashion choices. Hence this study recommends that Collaborations should be fostered between reality television producers and fashion industry stakeholders to promote responsible and sustainable portrayals of fashion on screen.
