INFLUENCE OF PEER GROUP ON ADOLESCENCE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOL IN OREDO L.G.A. EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study was designed and carried out to find out the influence of peer group on the academic performance of secondary school students in Oredo local Government area of Edo State. The survey research design was used for this work. Five secondary schools were selected for the study. To achieve this purpose, four research questions were formulated to guide the study. The research questions used were: Does peer group influence the academic performance of secondary students? Does the economic status of peers influence their learning and academic performance? Do parent show interest in knowing the peer group association of their children? The usefulness of peer group to teachers’ attitude to learning in secondary schools?. 130 questionnaires were distributed with 22 questions. The number of boys and girls respondents from the questionnaire distribution are; Number of boys are 39 while number of girls are 91. The research instrument used is questionnaire participant observation. The sample percentage and tabulation was used for the data analysis. The recommendations were proffered to alleviate the identified problems. Based on the findings, it was discovered that there are some academic influence of peer group on academic performance of adolescence in secondary schools in Oredo local Government area, Edo State.
