ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to determine “Influence Of Patterns Of Parenting On The Academic Performance Of Adolesent Students In Egor Local Government Area Of Benin City, Edo State, Five research questions were raised. The study adopted the purposive sampling techniques. The population of the study consist of two thousand seven hundred and sixty (2760) JSSII students from the 14 public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.The sample for this study will be one hundred (100) adolescents student selected randomly to represent the total number of two thousand seven hundred and sixty (2760) students from the 14 junior secondary schools population selected. This sample will be selected using simple random sampling technique.
The instrument for the study was the questionnaire which was designed based on the research questions raised. The face and content approach was adopted to determine the validity of the instrument and a test-retest method was used to find out the reliability of the research instrument which produced a reliability coefficient of 0.76. Findings from the study revealed that; Adolescents whose parents employ authoritative parenting styles (characterized by high warmth, reasonable demands, and responsiveness) tend to perform better academically compared to those with authoritarian or permissive parenting styles.
Adolescents whose parents are actively involved in their education, including monitoring homework, attending school events, and engaging in discussions about academics, are more likely to excel academically. The study underscores the importance of parenting styles in shaping the academic outcomes of adolescent students in Egor Local Government Area. It highlights the need for parents, educators, and policymakers to recognize the significance of supportive, authoritative parenting practices in fostering academic success. Additionally, interventions aimed at providing support to families facing socio-economic challenges could help mitigate the impact of external factors on parenting patterns and academic performance. Based on the findings of this research study, the following recommendations were made; There should be a survey or research study conducted within Egor Local Government Area to specifically examine parenting styles and their connection to adolescent academic performance. There should be workshops or parenting classes organized in Egor LGA
