ABSTRACT
This study focused on investigating the influence of parent socio-economic status on the study and academic performance of agricultural science students at the University of Benin. The study was guided with five research objectives. The study used the survey research design and the population of the study was the 339 member of 500L students in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin city, Edo State. However the study selected 183 500L students (54% of the population) as sample using the proportionate stratified sampling technique. Primary data was collected through the use of questionnaire which was validated and the reliability of the instrument was determined with the split half method and Spearman-Brown reliability computation was carried out. Data was analyzed using frequency count, simple percentage, mean (`X) and standard deviation. The findings showed that parental income, educational background, occupation, the home environment, and active parental involvement play pivotal roles in shaping the academic performance of students. The study recommended that; Universities and relevant institutions should consider providing financial support and scholarships to students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, Universities should organize workshops and information sessions for parents, especially those from less educated backgrounds as these workshops can provide parents with valuable insights into how they can support their children's education, including helping them develop effective study habits and strategies, the study also recommended that universities should offer comprehensive career counseling and guidance services to agricultural science students, Encouraging parents to create a conducive home environment for learning is essential, Universities can provide resources and guidance to parents on how to foster a supportive atmosphere for studying, including designated study spaces and limited distractions. Finally the study encouraged active collaboration between parents and students in academic pursuits can be beneficial. This can include regular meetings or communication channels where parents can discuss their child's progress with faculty and advisors, ensuring a strong support system for the students.
