INFLUENCE OF PARENTS ECONOMIC STATUS ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study examined Influence of Parent's Socio-economic Status on their Children Academic Performance in Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. It primary aim was study how the socio-economic rank of parents correlates with their children academic and cognitive outcomes in secondary school. Its objective was to find out if there is any link between parental statuses of secondary students and their academic performance which is the bedrock of physical and psychosocial mediators that influence students’ learning and cognitive attitude. The sample comprised 90 students and 10 teachers drawn from three secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the sample. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire which was validated by three experts. The Finding revealed that socio-economic status of parents affects their children academic performance in the sense that parents who are educated do influence their children positively while the uneducated parents have a negative influence since the children of uneducated tends to suffer malnutrition, Educated fathers were found to be very vital in guiding their children to do assignments apart from helping them to access necessary information, children of educated parents do post high scores in school as compared to children of uneducated parents and educated parents provide their children with necessary education/school materials. Based on the findings, the study recommends that Government should intervene to raise level of academic achievement among students, particularly the in rural area.
