ABSTRACT
The study examined the influence of parenting styles on the academic achievement of secondary school students in mathematics in Ovia North East Local Government area. Three research questions were derived from the topic of the study. The researcher employed a descriptive research design with the population consisting of 5,288 public senior school students within the local government. A sample of 150 students were selected using simple random sampling technique in 8 schools out of 17 public schools in Ovia North East Local Government. this study used questionnaire for data collection instrument and data was analyzed using descriptive analysis to establish the influence of parenting style on academic achievement. To test the reliability of the instrument, Cronbach's Alpha statistics was used. The reliability of the study was .862 and .956. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive (frequency count, simple percentage, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistic (one sample t-test and independent sample t-test). Hypotheses were tested at 0.005 level of significance. The study found that parenting style significantly influence academic achievement. the authoritarian parenting style was more dominant in Ovia North East Local Government, but the students who performed best experienced authoritative parenting style and therefore it was the best method of parenting style in relation to academic achievement. the researcher recommends secondary school administrators should encourage parents to develop strong communication with their Ward's teachers or school management.
