INFLUENCE OF PARENTAL EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND ON THE LEARNING OUTCOMES OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS: A CASE STUDY OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at ascertaining the Influence of Parental Educational Background on the Learning Outcomes of Secondary School Students. In order to achieve the intended objectives of the study, three research questions was raised and hundred and fifty (150) respondents drawn from the students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State were used. The descriptive survey research design was employed for the study. The tool utilized to collect the data was a self-made questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument was done using the Cronbach’s Alpha. Twenty (20) copies of the research instrument were administered to a set of respondents who were part of the population but not part of the sample. The data collected was subjected to Cronbach’s Alpha with a coefficient of 0.727 which indicates that the questionnaire was reliable. The findings showed that Parental educational background influences children’s education and learning outcomes. It was also discovered that parental educational background can shape parents’ expectations and aspirations for their children’s education. Also, there is high impact of socioeconomic factors associated with parental educational background on children’s learning outcome. Lastly, the study found out that higher parental involvement in education leads to improved learning outcomes for children, Positive parental role modelling contributes to the development of a growth mindset and a motivation for lifelong learning.. Based on the finding of the study, the researcher suggests that a longitudinal study should be conducted to examine the long-term effects of parental educational background and their expectations on children's education and career choices. This study could follow a cohort of students over several years to see how parental expectations set during childhood influence educational and career trajectories in adulthood. Such research can provide a deeper understanding of the lasting impact of parental influence on children's lives.
