ABSTRACT
This study examined the influenceof Nigerian home movies on the dress patternsof undergraduate students of University of Benin and it was anchored on Cultivation Theory and Uses and Gratification Theory. The study adopted survey research method with the use of questionnaire which contained 17 questions. The stratified and purposive sampling techniques were used to draw out 335 respondents from the total population of undergraduate students on Ekehuan Campus of University of Benin, Benin City. Data generated from the administration of the questionnaire were analysed with frequency tables and simple percentages. The findings of this study revealed that undergraduate students of University of Benin are exposed to Nigerian home movies, Nigerian home movies have a minimal influence on the dress patterns of undergraduate students of University of Benin, the type of influence Nigerian home movies have on the dress patterns of undergraduate students in University of Benin is decent dress pattern and the factors that influence the dress patterns of undergraduate students of University of Benin are the dress cultures portrayed in Nigerian home movies, religions, traditions, social statuses, fashion trends and weather conditions. The study concludes that indecent dress patterns are minimal, but still exist among undergraduate students in Nigerian tertiary institutions and this does not reflect the various cultures practised in the country. Therefore, the researcher recommended thatundergraduate students in Nigerian universities should be proud of their indigenous dress cultures and dress often in their traditional attires to promote Nigerian culture, institutions in Nigeria should device drastic measures to curb and eradicate indecent dress patterns among undergraduate students in Nigeria and Nigerian home movies should endeavour to preserve and transmit Nigerian cultural heritages from one generation to another so as to prevent Nigerian culture from going into extinction.
