ABSTRACT
This study, anchored on cultivation theory, investigated the influence of mobile phone texting on academic writing among Mass Communication Students in the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Benin City, Nigeria. The study became necessary following the assumption that mobile phone texting negatively and positively influence users. The study employed the survey deign with the aid of the questionnaire. The sample constituted of 240 Mass Communication students selected through proportionate stratified sampling technique. A well-structured questionnaire was administered to the students. Data generated were analysed and presented with the aids of frequency tables and simple percentage. Findings revealed that there is a relationship between mobile phone texting and students’ academic writings. Therefore, the study concluded that mobile phone texting would continue to be part of academic writing: It was recommended that the use of mobile phone texting should be done with caution so as to avoid spelling errors usually associated with mobile texting in order to enhance academic writing.
